About Google’s October 2023 Core Update

Google has recently released a core update to its search engine algorithm.

The October 2023 Core Update is aimed at promoting websites with quality content.

It could also mean downgrading low-quality content websites.

The October 2023 Core Update was announced on October 5, 2023, and was completely rolled out on October 19, 2023.

Aim of the update

For a very long time, Google has been focusing on promoting websites that offer authoritative, trustworthy, and comprehensive content.

The October 2023 Core Update targets the primary ranking algorithm of Google to reward websites that offer useful and informative content.

It is natural that websites with spammy or less useful content will get downgraded in the rankings and, consequently, in the search results.

Core updates and ranking changes

As one would expect, there will be a lot of ranking fluctuations during a core update.

You can find out more about ranking fluctuations on a website like Semrush, where Semrush Sensor tracks ranking fluctuations.

You need to show a lot of patience during a core update and the subsequent ranking fluctuation.

If your website is negatively affected by a core update, Google suggests that you check your website’s UX, as well as review your content and expertise.

Difference between a spam update and a core update

Google periodically releases algorithm updates to improve its search quality and performance.

Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether a ranking drop is due to a spam update or a core update.

In response to a comment by a user on X (formerly Twitter), Google explained that if you spam and see a drop in ranking after an update, then it is a spam update.

If you don’t spam and still see a drop after an update, then it is a core update.

Here is Google’s response on the X platform.

What must be done to recover from a core update?

If you are a website owner or a publisher who is worried about core updates, the following are the things you must do:

  • Review your content – make sure it is up-to-date, informative, comprehensive, and useful for the end user.
  • Create content that satisfies the user’s intent.
  • Focus on improving your UX.
  • Routinely check your analytics and performance to identify any anomalies.
  • Make incremental improvements in the quality of your website.
  • Realize that Google will reward high-quality websites in the long term.

Conclusion

Don’t panic if your website has lost rankings because of a core update from Google.

Make sure to create useful content, improve your UX, and increase the speed of your website to rank better.

Always keep in mind that incremental improvements to your website will help you in the long run.
