Any SEO worth one’s salt knows the importance of website title tags have on search engine rankings.
So, can you use emojis in the title tags and meta descriptions? What is Google’s take on emojis in title tags? Does it positively or negatively affect your website’s ranking?
Google Search Advocate John Mueller had answered the question recently, providing an idea on what Google thinks about emojis in title tags and meta descriptions.
Mueller stated that you can use emojis in title tags, meta descriptions, or content of a website as it is not against any of Google’s guidelines.
You might have noticed recently that Google rewrites the majority of title tags in their search results.
Therefore, there is no guarantee that the title tags you set for individual pages will be seen by your visitors, when your website is listed in the search results pages.
Google says that they do title tag rewrite to include meaningful keywords that improve your page’s click-through rate (CTR) and user experience.
That means, if you add emojis in the title tags of your web page, there is no guarantee that Google will show that title tag to the users.
John Mueller made it clear that Google will not show the emojis if it thinks the emojis would hamper the user experience of the search result.
Google will replace the emojis with words that it thinks will improve the user experience and CTR of the search results.
It means that, though there is no problem in adding emojis in your title and meta descriptions, it won’t help you at all.
It is then largely about wasting your valuable time in doing something that provides no real advantage to your search rankings.
You can read a detailed analysis of the subject in Search Engine journal here.
There is no advantage is using smileys in title tags and meta descriptions. If you had planned adding smileys for the potential benefit of improved CTR, then keep in mind that Google will remove your smiley and add a related term instead.
Therefore, it is best to add all your title tags and meta descriptions in plain text.
